2025 Action Group
Helms Elementary
The Structured Learning Classroom at Helms Elementary serves students with developmental and intellectual disabilities in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Students in this setting need intensive support, structured routines, and a flexible physical environment. To best serve these students, the teacher and aides create a highly specialized space designed for students with significant cognitive delays who thrive with elevated structure and personalized support. These students follow an alternate curriculum and require a learning environment tailored to their unique needs.
About this Project
This action group focused on the Structured Learning Classroom (SLC) at Helms Elementary. We completely reimagined and revitalized the space- every corner, every detail- so that students are able to flourish, and so Mrs. Williams, the dedicated SLC teacher, can feel fully supported in her mission. After over 162 hours of volunteer work, Village Heights was able to complete the following for Mrs. Williams and her students:
- Painted all walls and trim
- Installed a rock wall and sensory space
- Donated new classroom furniture and flexible seating
- Updated and fixed bathroom fixtures
- Installed new window blinds
- Built wooden desk dividers for flexible room arrangement
This space now not only meets the needs of a diverse group of students, but it became a shining example of what is possible for SLC classrooms across Houston ISD.
