Helms Elementary
Helms Elementary is a dual language immersion school in The Heights that receives Federal Title I Funding. In addition to those unique funds that provide campuswide resources, the Houston Independent School District also provides Wraparound Services to address the non-instructional challenges that students face which ultimately impact their ability to learn: most commonly, adequate food, clothing, and family counseling.
About this Project
During this action group project, Village Heights drastically enhanced the physical space (a portable building outside of the school) for the Wraparound Services at Helms by organizing and stocking a community closet, creating space for a community pantry, and making a space that is both more accessible and functional. This space is now used for:
- Storage for clothing, hygiene products, and school supplies
- Backpack wall for Food Bank Buddy Backpack Program
- Office for the wraparound specialist
- Comfortable, quiet space for students who need a break
- Storage for “snack shack” for teachers and students
- Shelves for food storage, refrigerator and freezer
